Riding Through the Storm: Mara & Ben’s Journey to Motorbiking Success

Riding Through the Storm: Mara & Ben’s Journey to Motorbiking Success

Some rider stories are destined to inspire, and Mara and Ben Clements’ CBT adventure is one of them. From the moment they stepped into the Machinehead Moto launch party, they were drawn the world of motorcycles.

Fast forward to the storm Darragh on the day of their CBT, and their grit and determination shone brighter than ever.

We asked Mara and Ben a few questions to look inside their incredible journey—from battling the elements to discovering a newfound passion that’s brought them a mutual interest.

Riding the Winds of Storm Darragh

When Storm Darragh rolled in with relentless rain and howling winds, most would have opted for a raincheck. Not Mara and Ben. Instead, they embraced the challenge, proving that a little bad weather couldn’t stand in the way of their goal.

“Passing my CBT in the middle of Storm Darragh felt like a huge achievement,” Mara shared. “There was one moment when the rain was pouring down, and all I could think was, ‘If my mum knew I was doing this…’ But I pushed through, and it was worth every second.”

For Ben, who had never been on a bike before, the experience was surprisingly enjoyable. “The instructor was always calm and collected, making it fun despite the storm. It helped me focus and actually enjoy learning,” he said.

What made this adventurous couple decide to dive into the world of motorbikes?

Ben had always been interested in bikes but needed a nudge to take the leap. “My wife persuaded me it would be a fun hobby to have together, and she was right,” he said.

For Mara, the inspiration came from the Machinehead’s launch party. “Being surrounded by like-minded people who share a love for life and adventure was eye-opening. It made me realise how much I enjoy doing something a bit out of the ordinary with my husband,” she said.

Their Bike Choices

Now that they’ve completed their CBTs, Mara and Ben have started exploring bike options together. This weekend, they’ll be checking out the Mutt Mongrel 125cc, they’re planning to share as their starting point.

But their dreams don’t stop there. Once they’ve passed their full motorbike tests, their dream rides are already lined up.

“For me, it’s got to be the Triumph Thruxton,” Mara revealed. “It’s such a beautifully crafted bike, with classic café racer style and a modern edge. It’s my dream to ride one through winding countryside roads.”

Ben has a different vision for the future. “The Indian Scout Bobber is my ultimate goal,” he said. “It’s rugged, powerful, and has this bold aesthetic that I love. I can already imagine taking it out for long road trips.”

Facing Challenges and Finding Triumphs

Motorbiking isn’t without its challenges, especially on a stormy day. For Ben, the biggest hurdle was gaining confidence on the road. “You feel more vulnerable on a bike than in a car,” he admitted.

Mara’s challenge was battling fear, especially at higher speeds in rough weather. “I told myself that pushing through and enjoying it would not only make it worthwhile but also give me a new level of confidence,” she reflected.

But those challenges were overshadowed by the triumphs. For Mara, it was the liberating moment when she realised she was truly riding. For Ben, it was mastering gear changes and feeling comfortable on the bike.

The Power of Community and Style

The sense of community they experienced at the launch party stayed with them throughout their journey. “Bikers aren’t as intimidating as they’re often made out to be. The positive vibe really inspired us,” Mara said.

And let’s not forget the style factor! Ben was drawn to the military-inspired elements of the casual biker wear range, especially given his marine background. Mara, on the other hand, loved the timeless edge of the leather jackets and the bold, vibrant colours in the Maria Riding & Wildust Sisters collections.

“The Wildust Sisters Stars & Stripes leather jacket paired with the Goldtop Roper gloves—dreamy combo!” Mara added.

What’s Next for Mara & Ben?

With their CBTs in the bag, Mara and Ben are ready to hit the road. First on their list is a ride to Arundel, enjoying the scenic winding roads.

As for dream destinations?

They’ve got their sights set on the vibrant autumn foliage of New England, cruising through forest roads and stopping at cozy roadside cafés.

Their advice to other aspiring riders?

Ben: “Plan rides for good weather—it makes the experience more enjoyable and less stressful.”

Mara: “If you’re learning as a couple, good communication and patience go a long way.”

How did Mara and Ben celebrate their success?

With a well-earned trip to the pub, their dog Ribs by their side, and mulled ciders by the fire.

This is just the beginning for this storm-chasing couple, and we can’t wait to see where their motorbiking journey takes them next.
